Yes … Keyboards …. Steve Job’s Influence

For the past 2 years I have used a Logitech DiNovo Edge wireless keyboard and mouse (Click here for info)It came with a charge stand, was super slim and light.  Moreover, with I combined it with Multiplicity software, I could easily control multiple PC’s, just moving the keyboard to the PC.  Yesterday, the battery died and I cried.  No time on the charger would resuscitate it. There was no place to replace the battery (it was sealed) While I will be filing a complaint; I needed a new keyboard immediately And so my adventures in keyboard land began.

Most keyboards are “beefy” manly objects.  They dominate the space and are filled with “gadgets” and functions.  The Apple keyboards, by contrast and thin and stripped down to the essentials.  If you use a Mac you most likely will be using a mouse; no need for extra buttons on the keyboard.  Who needs “CTL” “ALT” and “DEL” …. What a crazy way to start a computer? Who thought of that.  I wanted the freedom of wireless (bluetooth or radio frequency) but I didn’t want to fill up my desk.  I don’t use one of those “keyboard trays”.  I prefer a large expanse of desk and a large expanse of screen.  I also like a quiet keyboard with little travel.  I type fast and don’t like to exhaust my fingers.  For me, the DiNovo was perfect.  It’s the one on the left below.  Except for that BATTERY issue.

After spending time at BestBuy testing each keyboard (including opening the boxes), I finally settled on the 2 keyboards below.  One is from Microsoft … make of cheap keyboards.  It was their attempt to work with a designer (not some geek you keep locked in a cell who lives on pizza).  The result was a line of unusual peripherals that would look good in an art studio.  The ARC line, which includes a flexi-mouse (which I didn’t buy—I prefer trackballs, the bigger the better), has a mini-keyboard that runs on AA-batteries.  It is slightly bowed, and comes with a small carrybag.  The Radio receiver (not bluetooth—sigh) goes into the USB slot and clips onto the bottom of the keyboard.  It is more a laptop accessory, but has a nice feel for desktop use if you don’t mine giving up ARROW keys and a numpad. It’s on the small side.  It actually works great by my server where there isn’t much room for a keyboard. And, it can be great for traveling as a Laptop Accessory.  I usually connect my HP laptop via HDMI to the Hotel TV.  Now I can sit back on the bed and use the keyboard as a wireless remote for Hulu and NetFlix.

I was set to buy it when I spotted the Logitech k750 solar powered keyboard.  Albeit the amount of power drawn by a keyboard is minimal.  But the keyboard, less than 3/8” thick, has a solar cell that runs on office light and sunlight (both of which I have in abundance in my workspace).  It called out to me.  The “green” footprint was interesting.  More interesting was I no longer needed batteries or a charger so I could work non-stop into the night.  I will see how good the system works in the wee hours of the night.  It includes a “backlight” for the keys for night time usage.  On the quick travel, it’s great.  However, the keyboard is not a quiet as I like.  By design, likely, you can hear the clicks.  I guess I will be using a headset.

Time Matters/LNTPA Installer Error – InfoEnt.msi – On Open of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer

I don’t normally post installer bugs, but this is one that crops up from time to time and is difficult to swat down.  And so, for my purposes and anyone who works with Time Matters or LNTPA, here is the solution.  This bug happens because the Time Matters installer as well as the update utility makes registry changes that require a reboot.  When that reboot doesn’t happen, certain items required by Time Matters, as well as the Time Matters integration with internet explorer and windows explorer, don’t get set.  You get an error on opening IE or Windows Explorer that starts running the Time Matters / LNTPA installer. It keeps happening.  If you let the installer runs, it ends by asked for the location of the file INFOENT.MSI … which incidentally is nowhere to be found.  Read on for the EASY solution.

In Time Matters 10, go to the TMW10\Setup folder and run setup.exe.
Wait till it finishes extracting the MSI file clicking through a few screens, but DO NOT complete the setup
It will place a file called INFOENT into a newly created TEMP folder under the user’s personal profile
In WindowsXP, go to C:\Documents & Settings\[UserName]\LocalSettings\Temp\[HexCodeFolder CREATED TODAY]
In the temp folder look for a new folder with a GUID/HEX code name that was created the day of the installation.
When you find INFOENT.MSI copy the file to the TMW10\Setup folder
Now cancel the installation.
THEN, open IE or Windows Explorer and wait for the error to happen.  Wait until it ASKS you where InfoEnt.MSI is found.
Click on the folder lookup and point it to TMW10\Setup folder
Then click OK.
Problem goes away.

It would be nice if this were just fixed.  But, here is how you get around the problem.

Our new Legal Technology portal is live.  To try it out, please bookmark http://legaltechnology.bashasys.net/.  If you have a “RSS feed” or a “twitter” that relates to “Case Management Software”, “Document Assembly Software” that you want included, please go to the website and suggest a link.  There is a wealth of information coming from Vendors in these areas.  Rather than “surfing”, use our website to do your research or to keep up on developments.  You will find my “Time Matters Tips” blog there.  At the moment, there is no feed from LexisNexis on Time Matters, PCLaw or Billing Matters, but that should change with time.
